Natural Wellness Gift Ideas: 10 Cosy Ideas for Winter

Maryline Hourlier

The best natural wellness gift is one the person can use safely and enjoy: a hot water bottle, a box of herbal teas, shea butter, a well-chosen diffuser, a book or an online course. Before giving essential oils, think about who will receive them: they are not right for everyone. Every year friends ask me what to buy for someone who loves natural living. Here are my 10 favourite ideas for winter.

How to choose a wellness gift

A pretty bottle left at the back of a cupboard does nobody any good. I always ask myself three questions:

  • Who is it for? A pregnant woman, a young child, or someone with asthma or epilepsy cannot use some essential oils.
  • What is it for? Relaxing, sleeping better, caring for their skin, learning something new…
  • Is it easy to use? A ready-to-use gift with clear instructions is a gift that actually gets used.

My 10 natural wellness gift ideas

To warm up and unwind

  1. A hot water bottle with a soft cover: a winter classic for a cold tummy, back or feet. Choose one with a cover so it never sits directly on the skin.
  2. A herbal tea gift box: lemon verbena, lime blossom, chamomile or lemon balm for the evening. Add a pretty mug to make it special.
  3. A throw and a pair of warm socks: getting cosy is still one of the best remedies for grey days.

For skin care

  1. Pure shea butter: one of my winter basics for dry hands, elbows and feet.
  2. A protective lip balm, ideally with SPF for cold days outdoors or in the mountains.
  3. A neutral massage oil (sweet almond, for example), with a voucher for a homemade massage.

For essential oil lovers

  1. A diffuser, preferably with a timer. Tuck in a small card with the golden rules: diffuse for short periods in a ventilated room, never around a baby, a pregnant woman or someone with asthma, and never non-stop.
  2. A small set of gentle, versatile essential oils, such as true lavender, only for a healthy adult who already knows the safety rules.

To learn and take time for yourself

  1. An ebook or a practical book on natural remedies, to understand before using.
  2. An online course, self-paced: a gift that lasts long after the holidays.

Gifts to avoid

  • Essential oils for a child, or for someone pregnant or breastfeeding: Anses, the French health safety agency, does not recommend them.
  • A diffuser for someone with asthma or allergies, without medical advice.
  • Unlabelled bottles with no instructions, or products that promise to “cure”.
  • Essential oils “to take by mouth”: never swallow them without advice from a health professional. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health warns, for example, that tea tree oil should not be swallowed.

My tip

I suggest pairing an object with know-how: a hot water bottle with a herbal tea, a diffuser with a short safety guide, a lip balm with a kind note. The gift becomes a moment, and the person knows how to use it safely.

Precautions

  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children: no essential oils without medical advice; choose a suitable herbal tea or a neutral skin product instead.
  • Asthma, epilepsy: avoid diffusing and ask for advice before using any essential oil.
  • Medication: some herbal teas can interact with medicines; a pharmacist can advise you.
  • Never swallow essential oils, and always store them out of children's reach, away from baby care products.

When to see a doctor

If the person you are buying for has a long-term condition, takes medication, is pregnant, or is a child, ask a doctor or pharmacist before choosing a herbal or essential oil product. If a product causes redness or itching, stop using it and get advice. If someone swallows an essential oil by mistake, call your poison control centre straight away (1-800-222-1222 in the US, NHS 111 in the UK), or 999 / 911 if they seem unwell.
